Knitted in vintage 4 ply work tension square you may need to use modern DK or change needles with modern 4ply. Instructions for long or short sleeve jacket. To fit 34" bust and 37" hips, skirt length 27" this is adjustable.

Bestway 699: Fabulous vintage 1930's knitting pattern for a dress, knitted in vintage 4ply and 2ply alternately on one thick and one thin needle. Needles used size 10 and 5 imperial or 3.25 or 5.50 metric. It is essential with this and all vintage patterns to work a tension square to see if the needles or ply needs changing, Modern double knitting and 3ply should work on this one. To fit  34 - 35 inch chest. and is 42.5 inches long, but this can be adjusted.

Bestway 752: Great vintage ladies dress knitting pattern from 1940s. This wartime design for a simple dress is tailored to fit with panelled skirt and shirt style top.  Knit a frock and save coupons! so the pattern says. Try modern 4ply and change needles if needed to get good fit.  Bust 32, hips 36 inches. Easy variation on stocking stitch to give nice texture. Change needle size for slightly larger size. Crochet covers for button moulds or try the cotton wool stuffed type of button. Add a lace collar or knit one to contrast or match.

Bestway 755: Another fabulous vintage knitting pattern for a ladies dress from the late 1930's. Knitted in Bouclé wool on size 10 imperial needles. So could work out to modern 4ply, Bouclé was a fancy yarn with small flat bobbles along its length, you can buy similar today, but watch the ply. Work a tension square and see what needles you might need with the wool you choose. Tension is 7st and 10 rows on size 10 (3.25mm) over stocking stitch. Fabulous detail on back see below. To fit  34" chest, 42" length.

Bestway 933: Great vintage ladies gored skirt knitting pattern from 1940s. Another wartime pattern, this easy to knit skirt will fit all sizes  just by varying the number of gores. Modern 4ply should be used and a tension square worked. Elastic is slotted through the waist to give support. There are also instructions for a crochet turban and scarf worked in Soloman's Knot very easy - so it says!

Bestway 946: Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies dress from 1940s. This super design has a lot of vintage detail in the skirt with rib to create pleating, mock belt and cuffs, false pockets and can have long or short sleeves. Knitted in vintage 3ply that should knit to modern 4ply. Always all a little extra wool for these dresses. To fit 32-34 inch bust and 36-38 inch hips. Front is knitted in one piece as is the back. Buttons are crocheted. Lovely challenge.

Bestway 1003: Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies skirts from 1940s. This early wartime, large format pattern has instructions for all designs shown. Knitted in 3ply and 4ply, so try modern 4ply and modern double knitting in tension square. There is a ribbed skirt, flared skirt, plain and tucked skirt. Says to fit average figure which at that time would have been 12-14 size. The hip measurement is up to 40 inches all round, with one going up to 44 inches.

There are instruction for a pleated and a gored style both knitted in vintage 3ply  that should knit up to a modern 4ply, always work a tension square. The pleated on is to fit waist 26 inches and hips up to 40 inches, length 28 inches (adjustable). The gored skirt id to fit  26-28 inch waist and 38-40 inch hips.

This one has a neat box pleated skirt and smooth nicely fitted bodice. Knitted in vintage 3ply  so try modern 4ply. Easy to knit and beautiful to wear. From shoulder to hem 41 inches but you can adjust this.

This design is to fit 34-35 inch bust and knitted in a vintage 4ply wool that should be similar to modern 4ply, but could be worked in modern double knitting with a change of needles, always work a tension square. This dress has lovely fitted bodice with stand-up collar and a pleated skirt. A circular knitting needle is used for the skirt. There is an alternative neck line with small bow at neck and laid down collar, there is a zip at top of bodice. Length of skirt is adjustable. Colour suggested in the pattern are Grey, Navy, Meadow Green Golden Brown and a contrast Zip and collar!

Copleys 1858: Great vintage ladies dress knitting pattern from 1940s. This smooth line and simple design is very slimming and give emphasis to waist. Knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 3ply or if 4ply, try superfine merino and a change of needles. To fit 34 inch bust and 36-38 inch hips. Belt included and closes with press studs. Remember there is a certain amount of give in pure wool so slightly bigger figure will be fine. Easy to make bigger work in 4ply and a size larger needles, always allow more wool if you do this. Petersham is needed strengthen belt.  Opening at back with 5 small pearl buttons.

Felicity 4: Great vintage ladies knitting pattern for a dress 1940s. This simple to knit dress is to fit 35-36 inch bust. Knitted in 3ply on fine needles to create a lovely fabric that is light and figure flattering. Measures 42 inches in length, adjustable. The skirt is knitted in one piece on a circular needle. It is made in one piece. A super challenge for the advanced knitter. Allow a little more wool due to different thickness of ply difference since the war. Always work a tension square.

Belt needs to be purchased, lots of vintage belts available on ebay.

Bolero has batwings sleeves that are bracelet length and is knitted in one piece. The dress has well fitting top and slimming skirt, length can be adjusted - very easy to knit.

Overall length is 43 inches but you can make the skirt shorter or longer (if longer allow a little more yarn). This super slim dress is knitted in what was called a poodle wool, but a bouclé or modern poodle wool should work, try a tension square. There are 3.5 stitches to an inch on no 5 or 5.5mm. There are also machine knitting instructions for this one included.

Lux39-2Dress: Great vintage ladies knitting pattern for dress in two parts from 1939. This super dress knitted as jumper and skirt is actually reversible with a small cable in the stripe, when revered the cable becomes a garter stitch square. Knitted in a crepe style of yarn to give firmness and less likely hood of stretching this set is very retro but easily fashionable for modern wear. The jumper has a panel at the yoke and a straight neckline. To fit 36 inch bust, 30 inch waist and 39 inch hips. So nice easy measurements.  Try a fine 4ply for this slimming set.

Lux39-8Dress: Great vintage ladies knitting pattern for slim fitting dress from 1939. This lovely pattern has panels of leaf design giving a slimming look. Knitted in a bouclé yarn and fine needles for good fit. You could try a fine 4ply for this one, always work a tension square. To fit 34 inch bust, 26 inch waist and 37 inch hips. I you use a pure wool like merino not only will the dress be soft and figure moulding it will give a slight stretch to the measurements. A wool blend would work well too. At the neck and waist is a knotted cord (instructions given)

It is knitted in a wide rib, so the fit is wonderful, flick collar and buttons on bodice. Knitted in a 4ply, but always work a tension square to get the right fit. Looks smart with matching belt or contrast belt. Sleeves are dolman.

knitted dress MSD70-36: Great vintage ladies dress knitting pattern. This super design is for a full skirted dress that could be worn for a wedding, dance, party with a vintage theme. Beautifully feminine knitted in fine yarn, try modern 3ply pure wool or cotton, always work a tension square. To fit 36 inch bust. The skirt is worked in panels in feather and fan stitch. So pretty. Allow a bit more yarn for this one as morning haze was a very fine light wool.

MTE-13 Evening Dress: Stunning vintage knitting pattern for ladies lace evening dress from early 1940s. This dress is to fit 34 inch bust , dress length adjustable. This one is so easy to knit. the top is two rectangles of pattern knitting with ribbon pulling together in a halter neck and lace edge décolletage. The bodice is sewn to the skirt. A sash can be made from silk as shown in the illustration or a fancy belt. The dress skirt is lined with dress netting which extends below the hemline. Knitted in 3ply in an easy diamond lace design. The skirt is worked in 4 panels. Flower at bust optional. (without the dress netting this would make a stunning nightdress)

vintage 1920s ladies dress knitting pattern

Patons 193: Fabulous early 1920s ladies dress knitting pattern. This super dress has a band of lace knitting at the edge of the skirt and at the sleeves and blouse style top. Length is 39 inches and is adjustable and all round under arms is 40 inches, but keep in mind they wore these dresses loosely - although I don't have any knitted ones I do have a couple of cotton ones in my vintage clothes collection similar to this. It says Sunflower crochet wool, so probably a 4ply type of yarn, Work several tension squares and adjust needles to suit yarn or cotton chosen. Knitted on 4 and 7 old imperial sizes (6mm and  4.5mm) to give a light airy feel to finished garment. There is also the slimmer style of dress shown below in this pattern. Always work a tension square and change needles if needed to get the correct tension for a good fit.

Patons 111: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern from the 1940s for a ladies dress. Worked in vintage 2ply so this would now be 3ply, elegant and so very retro. This pattern is for  36 inch bust and 40 inch hips. This is a small wartime pattern book with interesting adverts for other styles on the back.

Evening tops and dress pattern Patons 710: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern for ladies - chic at its best! Here there are instructions for two lovely evening tops and a 'late afternoon dress' all knitted in vintage 2ply or modern 3ply. The two tops are 34" bust and the dress is 34"-36" bust, the lacy bands on the bodice of the dress are also on the skirt, giving a very slimming effect.

Fitted sleeves and little shawl collar to fit 34, 36 and 38 inch bust and 41-42 inch hips. Try a fine modern 4ply merino for this one, work a tension square and adjust with needle sizes. Allow a little extra wool for this one. There is also instructions for a casual jacket in two colours included.

Knitted in a bouclet (thinnish bobbly yarn similar to poodle wool but a bit thinner) Both style and yarn were very popular at the time. Looks super with wide belt. Always work a tension square. If you cannot get a fancy yarn try modern 4ply in a tension square. To fit 334, 36 and 38 bust.

Patons 2386: Great vintage ladies dress knitting pattern from 1930s. This longer length shirt waisted dress is knitted in a fine bouclé wool to a 4ply tension. So any modern 4ply will work, but always do a tensions square first. Bouclé gives a nice firm textured surface and is still produced by some manufacturers today. This one is to fit 36 inch bust, 39 hips and is 44 inches long, which was the desired length in this era, but can be knitted shorter.

The long sleeves are pleated at the top. Length is adjustable, to fit 34 inch bust and 39 inch at hips. These lovely designs are worth a try.

Patons 2917L: Fabulous 1930s knitting pattern for dress in thick double knitting, must do a tension square for this one and change needles to suit as the fabric must be quite firm to keep its shape- in the materials it asks for 6 glass rings! These are to hold the laces at the front and can easily be substituted in brass or similar. The length is 42" but can be knitted to any length, but to be authentic remember that dresses had returned to almost ankle length (mid calf at the very least) again by the 1930s, with the long slender lines seen here. Also remember that if pure wool is used it may drop a little in washing and wearing so a bit shorter may work well.

Always work a tensions square and change needles if needed.

Patons 3570: Great vintage ladies dress knitting pattern from 1930s. This slim  fitting dress has an interesting neck line and long sleeves. The pleated yoke and interesting fastening at the neck make this dress unique and can be also knitted as a jumper if you wanted. Knitted in double knitting wool to fit 38 inch bust. The original wool was a type of bouclé, but double knitting would work - try a mildly texture on if you can obtain bouclé. Always work a tension square.

This super design in a bouclé wool - this can still be bought or you could use a 4ply wool and work a tension square to see if needles need to be changed to get size. To fit 34 inch bust and there are instructions for long and short sleeves. Skirt is knitted on a circular needle, the rest on two needles. Petersham at inside waist gives stability and hooks and eyes are used at the side opening and front at neck.

Sirdar 1020: Lovely vintage 1930s ladies dress knitting pattern. This is so typical of the time and very flattering in design. To fit 34 inch bust and knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. This pattern comes from the late 1930s, so would be suitable for re-enactment and wartime get together. Length 37 inches, adjustable at the skirt. Dress lengths changed in the late 1930s and into the 1940s as wool and fabric was ration and in short supply, less was available to purchase, so skirt hemlines rose! Very easy to knit on size 10 needles (3.25mm)

Wear with a wide belt and gloves as shown for that truly retro look. To fit 35-36 inch bust. Knitted in a double knitting style yarn the tension is 5 stitches and 6 rows to the inch on size 6 imperial needles (5mm) Length can be altered to your own choice - but remember the elegance of this age comes from the long smooth lines of the fashions. Worth an effort this one.

summer dress pattern Weldons 221HJ: Great vintage ladies summer dress knitting pattern. This dress has a nice full skirt and beautifully shaped bodice with boat neck. To fit 32-34 and 36- 38 and 40-42 inch bust. Not too thick double knitting will work with this dress, or even try a 4ply in a tension square, always work a tension square. It suggest that this dress is lined, or a petticoat (slip is worn).

This elegant dress is knitted in vintage 4ply so try a tension square in modern 4ply and double knitting to see which will work better. To fit 34-36 bust and is 43 inches long. Note that hem lines rose later in the decade and in the 1940s to save cloth and wool due to rationing. This is a nice easy pattern and can be shorted to give more modern look. There are instructions for long or short sleeves and the suede belt is quite easy or make yourself from a length of suede and a large buckle or source a 1930s one!. The neckline has a little collar and bow, both knitted. The panels of design give this dress an elegant timeless style.

WB 381: Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies skating dress from 1936. How splendid is this? A fabulous pattern for a full skirted, short skating dress - I remember Ginger Rogers wearing one similar in a film from the 1930s!The high neck and tassel ties is so very of the era, the top fastens with a zip, but buttons could be substituted quite easily. To fit a 32 inch bust, waist 25, knitted in double knitting using a pair of needles and a circular needle (a flexible knitting needle)
