Chadwicks Knit for Defense: 172w2: Vintage knitting war time book. USA. Lovely book from 1941 for sweethearts, mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmas to knit for their loved ones fighting the good fight overseas. There are a couple of the patterns below. The book contains jumpers, round neck, polo neck, slash neck, chest protectors, gloves, helmets, sleeveless pullover, square neck jerkin, beanie hat, the high neck pullover and gloves as below, socks on 4 needles.  A needle conversion chart is included.

This jumper is knitted in a vintage double knitting that will be similar to modern Aran - Always work a tension square. To fit 38, 40, 42 and 44 inch chest.

USA service mens gloves, scarf and windcheater 1941 Chadwicks 172-7+9w2: Great vintage US forces knitting pattern for scarf, gloves and wind cheater from 1941. Knitted in a worsted yarn similar to modern Aran, always work a tension square. Scarf is ribbed at centre part to reduce bulk at neck. Gloves are knitted on 4 needles, polo rib at neck of wind cheater or chest protector as it is called in this one is knitted on 4 needles. US forces knitting pattern for helmet, gloves and wind cheater from 1941. Knitted in a worsted yarn similar to modern Aran, always work a tension square. Ribbed front keeps the balaclava close to the face and stops all those winter chills. This can also be made with ear flaps. Gloves are knitted on 4 needles, polo rib at neck of wind cheater or chest protector as it is called in this one is knitted on 4 needles.

Knitted in worsted which similar to our double knittig, but always work a tension square (gauge). This slipover or tank top could be knitted in 32, 34, 36, 38, 30, 42, 44 and 46 inch bust/chest, very easy.

We had a friend who was in USA Air Force in the early 1950s when I was a small child. He seem so exotic and interesting to a child of 4 years old. This selection of patterns has a jumper 38"-44" and the original design for a beanie and gloves. Needle conversion chart included. Knitted in worsted which is similar to our double knitting wool. Work tension square in suggest needle size to see which ply will work best for size required.
