Ladyship 1012: Fabulous vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1930-40s. This one is for three different shawls in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply, or for a lighter, but possible smaller shawl use modern 3ply. No 1 measures 41 inches and No2 measures 29 inches both are knitted and no 3 is crocheted and measures 40 inches.

Lavenda 968: Great vintage baby knitting pattern from 1930s for baby capes. This super pattern has two cape patterns and two shawl design to knit in baby wool. Always work a tension square. Beautiful for christenings and special occasions. Shawl at the top is 50 inches square the one at the bottom is 42 inches square.

great vintage shawl knitting pattern from 1940s Lincoln L1178: Great vintage baby shawl knitting pattern to match the dress set L953 above. Measures 55 inches square and is knitted in 3ply wool. The shawl has a wide arrow head design border and wide fancy rib centre. Centre is worked first then sides picked up and knitted sewn together at corners.

Little Pals 126: Fabulous vintage baby knitting pattern from the 1920/30's. There are instructions for a complete layette - the old fashioned way.  Shawl, in two sizes head shawl is 27 inches square and the larger shawl is 46 inches square, bootees, body belt, (keeps baby warm) dress, petticoat, matinee coat, bodice (again to keep baby warm) vest and pilch (soakers) to go over nappy. Knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square or use modern 3ply for smaller size.

Little Pals 137: Great vintage baby pram cover knitting pattern 1930s. This super pattern has 6 different designs to choose from all in what was called pram cover wool which looks as if it knitted as thick double knitting. You can use any yarn you like and see what size it would make, if you use double knitting on smaller needles probably will be good for buggy cover, lovely designs, great to experiment with.

LT596 Shawl: Great vintage shawl knitting pattern. This one actually matches a dress set shown on the babies pages and would complete a very pretty tradition christening set. Instructions for two sizes 54 x 54 inches and a head shawl measuring 30 x 30 inches., Nice fan design with wide garter stitch border.

Marriner 533: Great baby blanket vintage knitting pattern. This lovely pattern has instructions for the ribbon threaded blanket and the helmet style hat and mittens. To fit 1-9 months in three sizes. The blanket measures26 x 32 inches approx. Knitted in golden dew which may work out to be modern 4ply, work a tension square and see how it does. It is knitted on size imperial 11s or modern 3mm - which suggests a 4ply.

Mountain Maid 201: Super vintage baby shawl knitting pattern. Lacy shawl and a cute little pram set to fit chest 24, worked in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply for this size or modern 3ply for a smaller size. The shawl is knitted on size 8 needles (4mm) to give it a lacy delicate feel.  Shawl measures 52 x 52 inches.

Mountain Maid 271: Great vintage shawl knitting pattern 1940s. Fabulous design, with dainty pointed edging, worked in vintage 3ply, always work a tension square and change ply or needles to get size required. This shawl measures 54 inches.

Patons 447: Great vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1950s. Four lovely vintage shawls, three knitted and one crochet,1950's. There are instructions for a triangular, simple shawl 36" along each side, a lovely crochet shawl 36" square, and another simple shawl 54" square and a lacy shawl with a moss stitch border  42" square. All knitted in vintage quickerknit which was in between 4ply and  double knitting so work a tensions square in the ply chosen and adjust needle size to get the correct measurements.

Patons 671:  Great vintage knitting pattern for baby shawl 1950s. This is a stunning shawl is not as difficult as it looks, knitted in vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply and measures 43" square with instructions to make larger.  It is only a 24 row pattern repeat and the edging is only 21 row repeat.  Allow a little more yarn to be on the safe side with this one.

Measures 47" square and is knitted in vintage 2ply - this pure wool knitted to our modern 3ply tension, so work a square and see if you also need to change needle size to get the right measurements. Very pretty and so very retro this one. Nice advert for a Beehive book on the back.

vinatage patons pattern for shawl Patons 918: Vintage knitting pattern for baby shawl from 1940s. This little wartime pattern shows how pretty a shale can look if using more than one colour. This is s uper size 60 inches square and has a plain garter stitch centre and feather and fan border with lace edging. Wool suggested was 2ply shetland that knitted it modern 4ply. Choose your wool then knit at tension square and change needles to get size. If using pure wool dress carfully, dry flat and away for sunlight after pinning out to correct size - or to make square if size is unimportant.

Patons1085:  Great vintage baby shawl knitting pattern 1950s. There are instructions for two 2ply Shetland shawls, try Merino 3ply wool as this is softer than Shetland. Always work a tension square, try modern 3ply to see if you get a better measurement - Patons do a lovely 2ply merino and 3ply merino that is super soft and pure white. They measure 47" square and 50" square.

Patons 1172: This is a great vintage knitting pattern for two favourite baby shawls 1950s. As popular now as they were in the 1950's. Both these designs are in the booklet and were reissued from an even earlier publication. This one has a plain centre and wonderful wide edge and super lace like finishing edge and measure 54" square, worked in vintage 2ply so try modern 3ply in a tension square. On the right you can see the  fabulous circular shawl so popular through the decades and measures 50" in diameter, again knitted in vintage 2ply so work a tension square to see if you need to change needle size or to modern 3ply yarn. 1950's

Patons 3826: Great vintage 1920's baby pattern this time for four shawl. One crochet, two knitted and a knitted head shawl. They are in vintage 2ply which can be worked in modern 3ply, work tension square first. This cover shawl measure 58" square, the crochet one is 55" square and there is a circular crochet one measuring 29" from centre to edge, the head shawl is 31" square.

Patons 7010: Great vintage baby knitting pattern 1982. This pattern was issued when Prince William was born, along with a crochet one- see CROCHET page. Knitted in quickknit, so try modern double knitting in a tension square or for a slightly smaller version try modern 4ply.

The knitted one at the bottom of the picture is 48" x48" and the crochet one at the top is 41" x 41".  The crochet one is the one featured in Call The Midwife.
