vintage bestway knitting pattern 101 bag and socks 1940s

Bestway 101-6: The knitting pattern for bag and sock in tartan from the above book 1940s.  Plaid was very fashionable as an accessory at this time Bag measures 12.5 x 10 inches. The socks are 9.5 inches long at the foot, but this adjustable, they have plaid turn over tops and are knitted on 4 needles. Bag closes with large press stud, or you could use a super large vintage button to match the plaid - and make a loop to close. Webbing could be used as a strap if needed. It is strengthened with canvas and lined. Very easy to make.

vintage string bag crochet pattern 1940

Bestway 603cr: Great vintage string bag crochet pattern 1940. This pattern also has instructions for a KNITTED hot water bottle cover and slippers. All vintage 3ply so a modern 4ply will work, but work tension square to make sure. Bag is crochet in vintage 3ply cotton, so try modern 20 but change hook if needed.

It suggest Macramé twine, but experiment with knitting cotton, no tension square is given but it will not take longer to work a few pieces to see how it will work out in different cottons.1940's

Due to austerity many young ladies knitted everything they could, mostly out of yarn from unravelled clothes - so fair isle was ideal to create beautiful bags, hats, gloves, belts and jumpers. This charming flower decorated duo is a very fine example of this work. 4 needles are required for the beret and two needles for the bag.

Pretty Juliet cap and clutch bag in bobble crochet design in vintage3ply, so try modern 4ply. There is also another pattern for a different Juliet cap with a long tassel included knitted in vintage 4ply or modern double knitting with embroidery added.

Bestway 1170cr: Great vintage ladies turban and bag CROCHET pattern 1940s. This pattern has instructions for this super bag and a the forties fashionable turban style hat. The turban can also be worn as a scarf and the bag can have a long or short handle. Worked in vintage 3 or 4ply yarn, so modern 4ply or double knitting can be used. The bag measures 11 inches by 9 inches, the strap is faced with ribbon. There are also instructions for the sailor hat seen below also crocheted.

vintage ladies beret and bag knitting pattern 1940s Bestway 1250: Great vintage ladies knitting pattern for beret and bag 1940s. There are instructions for a super beret and matching bag both knitted, a small piece of canvas is required for the bag (two bag patterns included) an envelope bag and a shoulder bag. Worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. There are also instructions for what was popularly know as a jumper front and a waist coat front. This was just the fronts knitted and the neck ribbing would be joined so as to slip over the head and the waist ribbing would meet at the back with a button, or at the front. These were cheaper to make when there was a shortage of wool and coupons were required and were worn under suit jacket.

The bag is worked similar manner to the beret, is easy and look fabulous when completed. Knitted on 2 needles. This is a super pattern from an innovative period in knitting history. Due to austerity many young ladies knitted everything they could, mostly out of yarn from unravelled clothes - so fair isle was ideal to create beautiful bags, hats, gloves, belts and jumpers.

Homecraft 396cr: Great vintage ladies crochet handbag and gloves. So pretty this one, the bag is elegant and the summer gloves so delicate and pretty. This is a pattern from the wartime when austerity caused every one to save and to make do or mend. Not a bad idea these days. This set is worked in a yarn that works to a tension of 9 d.c and 22 rows to 2 inches (5cm) on 11 hook (UK) that would be 2.5mm in metric. Gusset is worked separately.
